This has to be one of my favorite weekend breakfast spots in Orange County. The Gypsy Den Cafe is nestled into the front corner of the Lab Anti-Mall in Costa Mesa and they are the perfect cultural fit for this "off the beaten path" shopping area.
Upon entering the cafe you will immediately notice two things, the furniture and the artwork.
It looks as though each piece of furniture has led a nomadic lifestyle itself and ended up settling down in this cafe for its permanent home. The ecclectic artwork keeps the eyes entertained and stimulates creativity, even when just sitting down to enjoy breakfast.
All of the breakfast foods are good, but there is a place in my heart for a scramble and cup of coffee. They have speciality coffees as well that go great with all of their dishes, and I always wait with anticipation as to which of the random coffee mugs i will get (my last one had a mural of the three wiseman on camels headed to visit the manger all with gifts in hand). Make sure you also try the homemade jams, they are fantastic.
There is plenty of seating here. I have never had to wait for a table, and the ample patio allows diners to sit and watch the passers by window shop at The Lab's different stores. Next time you wake up with a need for quiet, thought provoking spot to eat go check this place out. It's a great way to kick off the weekend.
